System Shepherd® Flexible Architecture

System Shepherd was designed from the ground up for flexibility, security, and reliability:

  • Flexibility: To meet the needs of organizations with complex, heterogeneous IT environments, we built System Shepherd to rapidly adapt to monitor virtually any operating system, database, network device, and third-party or custom application.
  • Security: System Shepherd’s agent-based architecture relies on one-way communication from System Shepherd Agents to the System Shepherd Backend, which provides a more secure solution than “agent-less” architectures with two-way communication.
  • Reliability: System Shepherd provides a failsafe mechanism and monitoring agent health checks to ensure reliable communication between System Shepherd Agents and the Backend.

System Shepherd

System Shepherd Agents

A System Shepherd Agent is deployed on each system you want to monitor. Agent behavior is driven by a customizable, XML-based template that tells the Agent:

  • What metrics to monitor
  • How frequently to monitor
  • The thresholds for warning and critical events
  • The domain address for sending data and alerts

Each lightweight, configurable Agent collects hundreds of platform-specific availability and performance metrics, compares them to customized thresholds to predict and maintain system health, and delivers them via secure connection to the System Shepherd Backend.

System Shepherd Backend

The System Shepherd Backend aggregates data and events from System Shepherd Agents throughout the IT stack. The Backend then exhaustively analyzes this data to determine current system health and predict potential future problems or performance issues before they affect end-users. When System Shepherd detects a problem, the Backend delivers alerts to the appropriate IT staff and supports analysis and reporting based on real-time, recent, and historical data.
